Taiwan Army Officer Accused of Leaking Defence Secrets to China

A Taiwan Army officer is suspected of committing espionage activities for China by leaking them some of their most confidential military secrets. The officer, who has been identified as Hseih, along with other personnel, has been given bail of 20,000 New Taiwan Dollars to 6,00,000 New Taiwan Dollars, as per AP. Their Defence Ministry has released a statement saying, “The Ministry of National Defense is saddened and severely condemns the small number of unscrupulous people who violated the duty of defending the country and committed such crimes as betraying the people of the country.”

The judicial hearing of this Taiwan Army officer is not the first case of China’s infiltration in their armed forces. Other army officers have also been accused of spying for China, which continues to take a dominating stance against the island nation. China has aggressively claimed Taiwan to be a part of its own territory and routinely conducts military exercises using its fighter jets. However, Taiwan has maintained that it is an independent nation and will defend its sovereignty from any attempts of invasion from China.
