India Facilitated BrahMos Missile to Philippines

India made history by delivering the initial batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relations. This transaction materialized over two years after signing a $375 million agreement to provide these advanced weapon systems. Utilizing its C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft, the Indian Air Force facilitated the transfer of the BrahMos missiles to the Philippines, as confirmed by defense sources.

Notably, in January 2022, New Delhi secured a landmark deal with Manila to supply the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, marking India’s maiden significant defense export order to the Southeast Asian nation. Under this agreement, the Philippines will receive three missile batteries, comprehensive operator training, and integrated logistics support.

In February 2023, the Philippine Navy completed the training of 21 personnel for operating the BrahMos missile system, focusing on operational and maintenance aspects. Developed by BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is renowned globally for its effectiveness.

Flying at a velocity of 2.8 Mach, these missiles possess a range of 290 kilometers and can be deployed from various platforms, including submarines, ships, aircraft, and land-based installations. Against the backdrop of escalating concerns over China’s assertiveness in the South China Sea, India aims to deepen defense cooperation with the Philippines, reinforcing regional stability.
