Government Announces Restrictions on Importing Laptops, Tablets

The Government of India has taken a bold decision to impose restrictions on the imports of tech commodities like laptops and tablets. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a statement that reads, “Import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra small form factor computers, servers are ‘restricted’ with immediate effect.” As per this notification, the exemption is provided for up to 20 items per consignment for R&D, testing, benchmarking and evaluation, repair and return, as well as product development purposes, according to Gadgets Now.

This Government decision is likely aimed at making big cuts in tech imports from China. Furthermore, importing any mentioned products will need a license and permission from the government. Several nations, including India, have raised doubts regarding tech products manufactured and originating from China, saying that the Chinese state gains access to and uses sensitive data of other countries through these apps and gadgets. After the 2020 Galwan clash, over 50 Chinese apps were thus banned in India, which includes the video streaming app Tik Tok, which is still under use in the United States and other Western nations.
